Kochi, India

Located in the coastal state of Kerala lies a city that is considered the gateway to Venice of India. South India is filled with culture, history, and good food. India is a country that has distinct culture, traditions and food in its different parts. South India, notably Kochi, is an example of these differences. In Kerala, fish is a staple food and hundreds of preparations exist. From succulent prawns to filets of Pearlspot, Kerala is a haven for any seafood lover. Additionally, the historic aspects of Kochi are truly spectacular. Unlike the rest of India, which was colonized by the British continuously, Kochi was initially the capital of Portuguese India, with the famed explorer Vasco De Gama getting buried at a chapel in Kochi. The local royalty made deals with the Portuguese, allowing them to do business in exchange for military protection against another local kingdom. A century later the Dutch arrived and vicious battles between the Portuguese and the Dutch led the Dutch to be victorious and Kochi fell into the hands of the Dutch. Centuries later as the British grew a stronger grip on India, the Dutch and British signed a treaty, giving Kochi to the British. When India became independent in 1947, Kochi finally became ruled by Indians once again. Kochi’s rich history has led many people from many religions to have called Kochi home, including Christians, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and Hindus. The ubiquitous cultures in Kochi have made it an incredible destination. Furthermore, relics from the colonizers and their influences can be found all over the city's many historic buildings and museums. Walk along the beautiful path by the Indian Ocean before eating the fantastic cuisine Kochi has to offer. Stay at the luxury Taj Malabar Resort and Spa and whisk yourself away from the stresses of life to your dream vacation. Cruise through the historic Kochi Harbor which is home to hundreds of Chinese fishing nets. Better yet, Kochi is a short flight away from any of India’s major cities, which are all connected to the rest of the world.
